Livingston Hospital Announces $78 Million Expansion Supported By USDA Investment

SALEM, KY – Livingston Hospital today announced a major milestone in its plans to build a new, modern hospital facility, thanks to a transformative investment from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The project—made possible through USDA financing secured with the support of Congressman James Comer—will expand access to healthcare services and strengthen the future of rural care in Livingston County and the surrounding region.

During today’s event at the Livingston Hospital Community Center, CEO Shane Whittington shared that the USDA investment will enable a $78 million expansion that includes a new hospital facility and significant upgrades to clinical, patient care and technological infrastructure.

“This support represents a powerful commitment to rural healthcare at a time when many rural hospitals are struggling,” Whittington said. “With this project, we are protecting access to high-quality care close to home—and expanding the depth and convenience of the services our communities need.”

Whittington noted the hospital’s long history in the region, opening its doors in 1954 and remaining a steady and dependable healthcare provider for 71 years. He also highlighted the impact of Livingston Hospital’s 2022 affiliation with Deaconess, which has helped strengthen operations, expand services and improve access to care.

Hospital leaders emphasized that the new facility will include advanced technology, updated clinical spaces, enhanced patient care areas and expanded service offerings—many of which patients currently must travel outside the region to receive. Groundbreaking is expected in late February or early March.

County Attorney Allen Wilson served as emcee and welcomed distinguished guests, including hospital board chair Barry Chittenden, Judge Michael Williams, USDA State Director Travis Burton and Congressman James Comer, all of whom delivered remarks about the significance of the project and the importance of supporting rural healthcare.

Congressman Comer and USDA leadership were recognized for their partnership and for securing the financing necessary to move the project forward.

“This investment will strengthen healthcare access, support local jobs and ensure Livingston Hospital continues serving families for generations,” Whittington said.

The hospital will share updates with the community as the project moves into construction.
